As we watch the snow fall in February and consider clipping our trackers to venture onto the ice outside our door, there are many interesting Zoom and online events happening that might pique your interest.

At the Museum

On Friday lunchtimes in February on Facebook and YouTube, Peek into Paintings takes a look at the oil painting “Yacht Defender” by Antonio Jacobson. This is a four-part series that explores the relationship between painting and its connection to Penobscot Bay.

If you’ve ever wondered what goes into the restoration of a historic ship, tune into Zoom on Thursday, February 17 at 6 p.m. and you can watch the restoration of the schooner AJ Meerwald, the official 1928 tall ship of New Jersey. The restoration is happening in Belfast by Clark & Eisele.

The series of traditional textile arts workshops starting on Thursday, February 24 from 6-8 p.m. will begin by exploring the world of Abbie Clifford, the wife of a Navy Captain, through her knitting. The hands-on workshop will last two hours on Zoom and continue for another two hours on March 3. Kits will be mailed to attendees, so it is important that you register early. The two-part workshop costs $60 and you must register before February 16 by contacting the educational director at 548-2529.

Don’t forget you can join the Members Monday Programs if you want to join the Penobscot Marine Museum as well as many other programs. Currently, Member Mondays is offering a series called “Peapods of the Maine Coast” on February 14 at noon. Topics vary each month and this gives you the opportunity to get a closer look at the objects in the collections and a peek behind the scenes of the museum. Membership ranges from $45 for an individual to $150 for a premium membership with premium benefits.

At the library

Spice Club kits are available. This month’s featured spice is rosemary. Learn some of its history and cultural background as well as new recipes. No need to register; come in and grab one!

For each completed line, you can choose a prize and participate in the draw for a personal care basket. Wellness Bingo runs until the end of February and the draw will take place on March 1st. Pick up a bingo sheet from the library or download it from: No charge for this.

Reminder: The library will be closed for President’s Day, Monday, February 21.

I’ll miss a column next week, but I’ll be back for news on February 24! Waiting for. I encourage you to celebrate National Grapefruit Month as well as Do a Grunt a Favor Day on February 17 and National Chocolate Mint Day on February 19. I’m sure you can figure out how to celebrate that one!
