Band of Horses announces new album “Things Are Great”

Today, Band of Horses announced their sixth studio album and first record in over five years, Things Are Great, which will be released on January 21, 2022 via BMG. Sonically, the album is a throwback to their earlier work and the kind of raw ethics that are at the heart of Band of Horses.

“Crutch,” the album’s first single was released today and an unattended first look at what fans can expect. With as much symbolic iconography as a lithograph by Frida Kahlo, “Crutch” is a magnificent guitar masterpiece that captures exactly why they are still one of the most important bands of their generation.

Band founder Ben Bridwell tells us, “I think like a lot of my songs, ‘Crutch’ begins with something from my real life. Obviously, ‘Crutch’ means some of the things that I used to depend on. My relationship. for one. I think I meant, “I have a crush on you” and I thought it was funny how relationships look like crutches too. I feel like everyone has had a moment when nothing went right and you got to keep going. I think that feeling hits you in this song even though you don’t know what the details are. “

This time around, Bridwell took on a bigger role in production than he ever did before, producing or co-producing every song on the album. He brought in former collaborators including Jason Lytle, Dave Fridmann and Dave Sardy from Grandaddy, but it wasn’t just old friends who were able to help Bridwell achieve the sound he envisioned. For the first time he worked with engineer Wolfgang “Wolfie” Zimmerman. The two had an instant connection that can be felt throughout the record.

Emotionally intense, both on a personal and elementary level, the songs were mostly written before the world closed, when we all faced our own mortality and began to take stock of our lives. Here we find Bridwell more autobiographical than ever before, detailing the nebulous frustrations and understated indignities of relationship changes and what a person will do to make things right. And what you do when you can’t.
